The Centre for Research on Infectious Diseases (CRID) marked International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 with a series of impactful activities that combined solidarity, dialogue, and celebration.

CRID delegation and representatives of the hospital staff
To commemorate Women’s Day, CRID’s women organized three main activities: a charity visit to a medical centre, a debate session, and a multidisciplinary sports competition.
On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, CRID visited the Maternity Service of the St Joseph Medical Centre of Nkoulou. The delegation was welcomed by Sister Rose Nsimi and Dr Peter Ndangoh, Director of the hospital. The purpose of this initiative was to support women facing financial hardship. Gifts made up of soap, mineral water, and maternity sanitary towels among others, were offered to hospitalized mothers. In addition, hygiene equipment was donated to the hospital. This activity aimed to show love and support to new mothers, promote maternal health awareness, and reinforce CRID’s spirit of social responsibility.
The following day, CRID hosted a debate under the theme “Accelerating Action: Women Scientists, Protecting Life, and Collective Responsibility” in its amphitheater. Moderated by Claudine Maffo, Ph.D student, the session brought together distinguished panelists including Dr. Basile Kamgang, Senior Research Scientist; Dum-Buo Nnamdi, Social Scientist; Dr. Nelly Tatchou; and Dr. Aurélie Yougang, both researchers. The special guest was Dr. Kemleu Sylvie, Medical Biologist at Centre Pasteur du Cameroun (CPC). Discussions explored barriers faced by women in science, from balancing professional responsibilities with family life to overcoming gender-based violence. Panelists emphasized the importance of mentorship, faith, and self-confidence, while highlighting the urgent need to increase women’s representation in leadership positions. The debate was followed by a convivial reception, providing an opportunity for participants to continue exchanges in a celebratory atmosphere.

Sports competition
To conclude the celebrations, CRID organized a sports competition on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Rainforest International School Stadium. The event featured a friendly obstacle course challenge designed to promote unity and well-being. Four teams, each led by a female team leader—Falenne Kwalar (Finance Head), Murielle Wondji (Laboratory Manager), Aude Lekaboth (Administrative Coordinator), and Rosine (Project Coordinator)—competed in a dynamic and joyful atmosphere. The activity fostered collaboration and healthy rivalry, while highlighting female leadership and empowerment. Men joined in the fun as well, ensuring that all staff shared in the festive spirit.
Through these diverse activities, CRID reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality, supporting women in science, and promoting social responsibility. The celebrations not only honored women’s contributions but also strengthened the bonds within the CRID community.
