On February 23, 2026, the Centre for Research on Infectious Diseases (CRID) welcomed Dr. Avelin Aghokeng from the Institut de Recherche sur le Développement (IRD), France, along with Armando Djiyou, an early-career scientist.

Dr Avelin Aghokeng discussing with CRID scientists
Their visit centered on identifying new opportunities for collaboration in the field of infectious diseases, with a particular focus on drug resistance. Dr. Aghokeng is a member of the Infectious Diseases and Vectors: Ecology, Genetics, Evolution, and Control (MIVEGEC) unit at IRD France. He previously served as Director of the Virology Laboratory at Research Center on Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases (CREMER) and brings extensive expertise in HIV drug resistance and emerging infectious diseases.
During their visit, CRID researchers engaged in fruitful discussions with the guests before guiding them through the institute’s laboratory and insectary facilities. The visitors described the infrastructure as “amazing.” Dr. Aghokeng remarked: “I’m impressed by the extensive research being conducted at CRID. There are no boundaries between the research we do. We must see how to work together in collaboration.” The guests were hosted by a dedicated CRID team composed of Prof. Cyrille Ndo, Head of the Parasitology and Microbiology Department; Dr. Magellan Tchouakui, Research Scientist; Dr. Elanga Emmanuel, Deputy Head of the Medical Entomology Department; Dr. Yvan Fotso-Toguem, Head of the Testing Facility; Dr. Tatiane Assatse, Researcher; Murielle Wondji, Laboratory Manager; and Williams Tchapga, insectary manager, who together showcased the institute’s expertise and facilities.

Family picture
Looking ahead, CRID is considering expanding its research portfolio to include viral infections. The institute will continue to evaluate potential collaborations and expertise to shape its future directions and strengthen its role in advancing global health research.
