Background
Eugenie MAGANG obtained her PhD in March 2024 at the “Institut Agro de Montpellier, France” in collaboration with the University of Dschang, Cameroon. Her thesis was funded through the ARTS (Allocation de Recherche pour une Thèse au Sud) support provided by the IRD-DPF and was co-supervised by Prof Gustave SIMO, Prof Victor KUETE and Dr Jean-Mathieu BART. Within the ARTS program, Dr Magang had the opportunity to undertake four research stays of six months each at the INTERTRYP research unit (UMR177_IRD/CIRAD), Montpellier, France, where some molecular analyses were performed.
During her PhD, Eugénie was mainly interested in the animal reservoir of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and the dermal reservoir of trypanosomes. She produced baseline data that are useful for designing new control strategies to fight against human an animal African trypanosomiasis. She was also interested to assess the impact of vector control on animal trypanosomes transmission in Campo sleeping sickness focus of Cameroon. Dr Magang also had the opportunity during her thesis to travel at “Institut Pasteur Guinée” to learn how trypanosomatidae can be identified using CRISPR techniques.
