Background
I am senior researcher since 2017. I hold a PhD and HDR in parasitology and medical entomology from the University of Yaoundé 1 Cameroon and Montpellier 2 France. Although my primary research focus is on malaria vectors, I also work on arbovirus vectors (Dengue, chikungunya, Yellow fever …), Human African Trypanosomiasis and onchocerchiasis. My research encompasses both basic and applied aspects of malaria, focusing on malaria epidemiology, vector bionomic, taxonomy, vector control, population genetic structure, molecular biology and insecticide resistance. I have an established record of productivity in many aspects of malaria, with more than 110 peer-reviewed publications. I believe a better understanding of vector population evolution could be critical for the successful elimination of vector borne diseases. I managed a research team of over 20 people. I have trained over 40 students at master, PhD and postdoctoral level. Throughout my career, I have fostered important international collaborations. I have been for over seven years the training coordinator of the higher school for public health in Central Africa (CIESPAC) and project coordinator at OCEAC. |

Malaria vector bionomic & control: I have contributed to the characterization of secondary malaria vectors in Central Africa. These studies have permitted to raise awareness on the real contribution of these species to malaria transmission. I also contributed to the development of new molecular tools (microsatellites, cytogenetic map) for genetic studies on An. nili and An. moucheti two important malaria vectors in the forest region. I conducted important studies to assess the impact of deforestation and urbanization on malaria vector bionomic in central Africa. Studies in major cities of Cameroon (Douala and Yaoundé) permitted to report the adaptation of the malaria vectors An. gambiae and An. coluzzii to the urban environment. I also conducted a large scale larviciding trial in the city of Yaoundé providing evidences on the efficacy of this intervention in urban settings.
Insecticide Resistance: I have contributed in the study of insecticide resistance by carrying surveillance activities in various part of Cameroon and by mapping the distribution of resistance mechanisms in malaria vectors. I also wrote a review on the situation of insecticide resistance across Cameroon. These data guided the NMCP in the planning of their activities on the field and the development of strategic documents such as the national plan for insecticide resistance management. Bionomic of Culex mosquitoes: I initiated since 2017 a serie of studies to assess the bionomic of Culex mosquitoes who happen to induce high burden in urban settings and who were up till now not well studied. My studies provided critical information on their biology, resistance to insecticide and epidemiological role in urban settings. The rapid expansion of insecticide resistance in Culex species is now affecting all insecticide classes. I also wrote a review summarizing information on this species distribution in Cameroon since the 1960.
Arbovirus transmission and Aedes bionomic: I have developed several studies intended to understand the transmission of arboviruses in Cameroon and on the bionomic of Aedes species in Cameroon. My studies indicated the circulation of both dengue and chikungunya in the country and the presence of several dengue serotypes circulating in the population. Vector surveillance studies indicated the adaptation of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti to various type of environment and emergence of insecticide resistance in these mosquitoes with new resistance mechanisms appearing. Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT): I undertook studies on this disease which is target for elimination by 2030 but which is still responsible for a high burden in central Africa. My studies in the Republic of Congo indicated a high circulation of animal trypanosomiasis in endemic foci and the distribution of different tsetse flies species which could be vector of human HAT. We also highlighted the influence of different factors in endemic foci which could influence the epidemiology of this disease. |
