On Tuesday, December 20, 2022, TCHAWA Thierry, laboratory technician at CRID defended his master’s dissertation on Public Health and epidemiology with distinction at the Catholic University of Central Africa, Yaoundé-Cameroon on the topic; “study of the dynamics of malaria transmission and insecticide resistance profile in Anopheles moucheti in Nyabessang south – Cameroon”. The result of this work shows that, the locality of Nyabessang in the South Region of Cameroon is malaria hyperendemic.
This study took place over two seasons (dry and rainy), from December 2021 to November 2022, allowing to evaluate the resistance of malaria vector An. moucheti present in this locality after the construction of the Memve’ele hydroelectric dam. The aim was to determine the culucidian composition (mosquito with a strong biting proboscis) over the two seasons, evaluate the entomological parameters of malaria transmission for An. moucheti, and finally to establish the resistance profile of the vector according to each season.
Results show that An. moucheti is one of the major vectors of malaria in this locality alongside An. paludis. Susceptibility tests to insecticides revealed a probable resistance of An. moucheti. Evaluation of the efficacy of the standard mosquito nets recommended by the World Health Organization has led to the detection of minimal efficacy of Olyset and Permanet 2 nets against An. moucheti.

Based on the results, the young scholar recommends that, public authorities should include in vector control programs the distribution of second generation nets (containing a synergist) and consider indoor residual spraying (IRS). In addition, educate the population on the appropriate use of phytosanitary products used in the field.
