The Executive Director of CRID had the honour to give a plenary talk during the second ordinary session of the Cameroon National Assembly on June 12, 2024.
The talk focused on the impact of research in the fight against malaria. At this juncture, Prof. Charles Wondji, CRID’s Executive Director, apprised the Minister of Public Health and the parliament of recent advancements in the field of vector control. Furthermore, he presented innovative new tools, including spatial repellents. He also highlighted the critical need for sustained support from policymakers to advance research, enhance healthcare systems, and implement evidence-based interventions to reduce the burden of malaria in our country. The session generated significant interest and discussion among the audience. The CRID’s exhibition stand, led by Dr. Magellan Tchouakui, showcased the state-of-the-art facilities used at CRID to perform high-quality research.
Prior to this, a caucus of parliamentarians had visited CRID in February 2024. It was part of a fact-finding mission of 3 days to some Yaounde-based research structures. Three of the visitors were members of parliament accompanied by representatives of the Non-Governmental Organization “Impact Santé Afrique (ISA)”. The Parliamentarian delegation, including Hon. Njume Peter, Hon. Ngoko Marie Louise, and Hon. Ndjip Bienvenu, had the opportunity to tour CRID’s laboratories and insectarium. They said the objective of their visit was to better understand the scientific advances and challenges in the fight against malaria. While congratulating Prof. Wondji for the tremendous investment that will benefit Cameroon and Africans, the members of parliament pledged to accompany the malaria researcher and mosquito geneticist. It is in a vein to support and encourage him that they later invited him to speak at the National Assembly.
