The Centre for Research in Infectious Diseases (CRID) is seeking two (02) highly motivated PhD candidates in Microbiology to join a newly launched project titled: “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Spread from Wastewater through Urban Agriculture in Cameroon”, funded by the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS).
🧪 Project Overview:
This multidisciplinary project aims to understand and mitigate the transmission of AMR through the use of untreated wastewater in urban agriculture, using genomic epidemiology, field interventions, and stakeholder engagement.
🎓 PhD Focus Areas:
The selected PhD students will work on topics related to:
- Isolation and characterization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from environmental and agricultural samples.
- Genomic and molecular analysis of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs).
- Evaluation of AMR transmission pathways from wastewater to crops, markets, and households.
- Contribution to designing and evaluating AMR mitigation strategies at the farm level.
📝 Eligibility Criteria:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline.
- Strong laboratory and molecular biology skills.
- Experience in environmental microbiology, AMR research, or genomic analysis is an asset.
- Good communication skills (English and/or French) and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
📍 Location: CRID, Yaoundé, Cameroon
📅 Start Date: When registration is completed
💰 Funding: The positions are fully funded for the duration of the PhD (3 years), including research costs and a monthly stipend.
